Media Training
Helping executives understand and deal with the media
You should be able to talk to the press without breaking into a sweat.
You should be able to get YOUR points across, get the key message in or, save your reputation after a major catastrophe.
To do it properly you need to be trained.
Our media training courses focus on two key areas:
- ‘Understanding the media – and how it ticks’
- ‘Handling interviews’
Our courses are specifically tailored to our clients’ requirements. If you want your frontline managers to have the confidence to handle potentially hostile broadcast interviews in crisis situations then we can put the emphasis on interview techniques. Alternatively you may simply want more junior managers to have a better understanding of how the media works and how they can use it to their (and your) advantage.
Prior to any media training assignment we will take some time to understand your requirements and your business. This ensures that the training is not only relevant to your organisation but is focused on ‘real’ situations that your managers may have to face in their job roles.
Our training is tailored to your requirements and focused on 'real' scenarios that could actually occur...
The level of training can also be varied. For senior executives who may be in the frontline in a crisis situation we utilise a central London studio where we undertake both TV and radio training with a professional (Today programme) journalist.
Whatever the level of training we ensure that those undertaking the course come out with a better understanding of the media and greatly improved confidence in their own abilities to manage it!
This program outline may be helpful in providing an insight into some of the areas covered by a typical ‘Understanding the media’ course offered by Kestrel:
- Why bother - The power of the press. How it can work for your organisation!
- What’s what - Understanding the terminology.
- How the media works - Differences between national and local interests, specialist, trade publications, press, radio, TV & Internet. Advertising, advertorials and editorial – understanding the differences.
- Dealing with the media - What they want. How they want it. What they DON’T want.
- Proactive and reactive media relations - Crisis/problem situations. How to identify when an operational issue may become a media issue. How to use the local media.
- What makes a good story - What they consider news you may not. What you consider news THEY may not!
- How to approach the press - How to construct a good news release. Write a release exercise.
- Press interviews - How to deal with an interview. How to deal with a hostile interview. What to say. What NOT to say.
- Questions and general discussion.
Price: From £1,600 (the exact cost will depend on location, course content and number of participants)
